As part of our ‘Vendors You Should Know’ series, I would like to introduce Shawn Livingston with Total Home Repair. Shawn is a great handyman and today, we’ll discuss a common issue facing many Georgia homeowners: wood rot.
Georgia’s climate is very harsh on wood. If you don’t maintain the outside of your house properly, the sun will beat down on your home and flake the paint. Once the wood is exposed to the weather, water can set in and cause wood rot.
In order to prevent wood rot, you need to maintain the trim around your windows by properly caulking the trim and joints. You should also make sure to paint your home on a regular basis to prevent water from getting into any cracks.
Sometimes, fixing wood rot is very simple. All you have to do is take off the piece that has rotted and replace it. However, if you leave wood rot alone for too long, it can become a real problem. The entire window frame can get rotted and water can get into your home.

Water damage is a common problem that Shawn sees in homes. If you don’t clean out your gutters, leaves will get stuck in your downspout, causing water to get stuck in your roof and in the eaves. Like wood rot, this is easy to prevent—just make sure that you clean out your gutters.
